Rain, Rain....

Last Saturday was to be the "Plow Day" Hubby looks forward to all year where we should have seen things like this going on...

Instead, it looked like this....

Hubby was not happy.

Poor Hubby.

We have had 11 days of rain and very little sunshine. The garden has flooded twice- looks like we will be re-planting our beans. My tomato plants have started wilting, too- too much water around the roots and not enough sunshine.

Farm Chick Paula is not happy either.

On a happier note, we are out of the drought we've been in for three years, so I'll not complain. (Too much.) And I'm really excited about my little apple and pear trees- this is what I found this morning....

Several of you commented on my last post about Daisy and Edie's wool and asked what I did with it- and to be perfectly honest, I've never done anything with it... until now. I've always wanted to try felting, so with some careful shearing this time, (I'm getting better at it, just still VERY SLOW) and some wonderful advice from my friend Kathy from Cedar Pond, I'm going to attempt to clean and felt their beautiful grayish-black colored wool. I'll let you know how I do for my first attempt.

Oh, and it seems the little one-egg game is still going on up at the banty coop. Apparently, whoever's bottom touches the egg last before it hatches will be the winner. (And the momma.)

These two are daughters of the Little Terrorist, by the way.... can you see the resemblance?

Scary, isn't it?

  1. We have had nothing but rain here too for days and days and days on end. We too were in a huge drought so the rain is welcome though, I am ready for some sunshine. The rain can come once or twice a week....that would be just perfect!!!

I am having to laugh at the two girls trying to hatch the egg. Can't wait to see who is the winner!

  2. The rain has been a little stressful for me too. We were lucky to plant before most of the rain came. Most of our garden is doing great. There are a few things that just don't seem to be coming up.

The hens do look a little angry.

  3. We've had our share of rain around here, too, but we've had a drought going on since last summer, so it's welcomed! You always make life on a farm sound like such fun!!!

  4. Wow, that last shot is amazing! Who knew chickens could be so beautiful?! (not me, anyway!) Sorry to hear about all the rain. At least it's not snow!!! ;)

  5. crazy chickens - maybe they are suffering rain in the house crazies? sorry about the Plow Day - but breaking a drought is a big thing! We have not had normal rainfall this year and are a tad concerned going into warm weather - not a thing we can do about it, My containerized garden is nothing to blog about - looks pitiful with no real heat to get those tomatoes moving and squash making some plants. I have one squash plant with three small leaves and one HUGE blossom. Nature is a bit askew this spring

  6. Ha! I knew they had to be related to the little terrorist!! They are just too determined! :)

We've been lucky to get a couple days rain then a couple days of sun, so so far it's balanced out.

I hope you guys clear up soon!!

  11. I heard about all the rain and wondered about your garden.....we could use some but other than that, its nice here....in the 80s today. Love the apple and pear photos....our apple tree is just starting to bloom...the cold snap we had in February really confused the trees....
the terrorists two daughters look just like her...you're right, a little scary!

  16. I am so sick of the rain!!!! I cannot get anything done around here!

  17. You've got rain, we're wishing we had a wind turbine on the property. The gales that have been blowing around here since the weekend could make you independant of the money sucking utility companies!

Your hens are a hoot. Is that usual for hens to squabble over a lone egg? Good luck with the felting!

  18. So sorry to hear of the plow day being rained out..however, if it has gotten you out of your three year drought..that is wonderful!

Can't wait to see how things go with your felting...I would LOVE to have sheep!

  19. Glad the drought has come to an end, but that is too bad about the plowing and the plants that are suffering from too much water at the roots.

Those chickens are so funny bantering over the egg!

Looking forward to hearing about and seeing your felting process! :)

  20. Oh, poor hubby..you really captured that! We've had so much rain here as well. I hope that your garden can make a come back. Please keep us posted on who gets to be the momma - wow they are so scary.

  21. There will be sunshine but it sure makes it hard to get all the work done without it! We still have blooms on our trees..the garden is plowed but not tilled..and it's raining!
I love the behavior of chickens..or any animal for that matter. They do what they feel they need to do...just like us! :)

  22. Send that rain down south! We need it badly. Your broodies are so cute! I have one that is broody right now and due in just a few days. I am getting excited about new little chickies!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Gotta love those broody hens! They are so determined, aren't they? I love the expression you captured on their faces!

You have fruit on your trees already! Ours have just started blossoming......

So how did the 'plow mud' days go ?

Looking forward to seeing what you create from your wool....if nothing else you can turn the clean wool into batting for quilts! I am toying with using a lot of mine for just that, and making wool lap blankets.

  24. I am so happy to be out of the drought. I hope it stays away all summer too!
We haven't had as much rain as you have up that way. But enought to get the garden(and the weeds) up.

I've seen that unhappy, want to be plowing, look before. Around here.

I can't wait to see how you felt the wool.
Your banties remind me of my banties. Cute but determinded.
    Have a great day.

  25. It's raining...it's pouring! AGAIN! My tomato plants are about to float away! Good luck with the wool...let us see what you do!

  26. Oh, Paula, I know how you feel about the rain. We've had our share of it too in Chattanooga. Sometimes I wonder if the sun is every going to shine again. But, I shouldnt complain because you know around these parts that about July and August everything dries up and we get a drought.

Have you ever thought about spinning the wool for knitting?

  27. Hi Paula. I just found your blog and am now a follower. You have a nice blog. You have a great looking farm and I love the animals. I am waiting on my first chick order to arrive - first week in June. I'll be back. Becca

  30. Tennessee has certainly been blessed with rain over the past weeks! It is raining on and off again this morning---
There is a family resemblance in the two girls and that Little Terrorist! What adventures lay ahead....!!!!

  31. Those banty hens are adorable! That is so funny that they are both trying to hatch the egg. I wonder if they'll both try to be mommies once it hatches! Oh, I wish you could send some rain our way!
    Blessings,
    Lorilee

  32. We've had the rain too-and like you-can't plant in the rain. We did get some sun for the past 2 days and have finally got most everything else planted. Hopefully you did too!!

  33. What are you feeding those hens, anyways????? Maybe they need a change in food! What a hoot those gals are! Sorry about all the rain. We are in a drought here in Florida, but did get some rain the past few days. A welcome sight, believe me! I'd be happy with a shower a day!

Love the sheep!!!!! Can't wait to see your felting project!
