In my last post I had a picture of our newest construction project but didn't tell you the details..... this is our new 24 x 24 sheep barn with a feed room for keeping hay and grain close at hand and also plenty of space to set up lambing pens next winter.
Here it is with the roof on, still under construction....

Definitely a much-needed upsizing for our woolies!

Last year was a terrible year for our garden... in fact, we've had three tough years in a row trying to grow anything. Last year was very wet and a lot cooler than normal, and the two years before that we were in a drought. We've decided this year to cut the size of our garden way back..... this was the size of it last year before we planted...
And here is my new downsized garden... about 10 x 10.
Tomatos, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries are already in- Hubby is going to plant some corn at another location to sell but this is all we're going to attempt this year for our own table.
This is a picture of my new nose job, courtesy of sweet little Molly the sheep:
Molly was on the trimming stand getting her spring shearing and was already stressed out about the whirring of the shearer motor getting closer and closer to her head, when suddenly Smokey came bouncing up the driveway and she saw him out of the corner of her eye. Next thing I knew, WHAMMO... her head came off the stand and knocked me right square-dab in the face. My nose bled for 10 minutes... I haven't had a nose bleed in probably 10 years, so I guess I was due for a good one.
Thankfully, I don't think it's broken now, but I sure wasn't convinced right after it happened.
*Sigh*... nothing like have a sheep rearrange your face...
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend- Plow Day is this Saturday and Hubby is so excited... hopefully the weather will stay nice and I can take some good pictures!
Bless your heart! I bet that hurt. We had a snake in the yard one time and the cat was trying to size it up. I got nervous thinking the snake was going to strike so I quickly picked her up and it scared the day lights out of her. She tore into my forearm like she had razorblades. It hurt soooo bad. I couldn't be mad at her though, she was just acting out of being scared. Silly me for picking her up, ha.

ReplyDeleteLooks like the new barn is going to be much bigger...yay for the sheep. I hope your garden does well this year. It looks a more manageable size. I still have never tried a garden and I really want to. I will get a couple of tomato plants again and I'm thinking of trying a strawberry plant.

The new barn will be so nice, lots of room to move around in. And I know what you are saying with the garden...ours didn't do so good last year either. We are moving it to a different spot this year. If we can ever get it planted, that is. We had snow again last night. The news guy was saying you can't really plant until after Mother's day here. Even then, you can lose things to the freeze.
I love your farm...it's so pretty.
Wow, Paula, you deserve hazard pay! hope its alot better now and you were lucky not to have a broken nose.....hope your garden does better this year...last year was our first and it was so so..we did learn alot though...this year so far it looks alot better..although a slug made a meal out of our Romaine lettuce seedlings.....

ReplyDeletePaula, I've never known anyone who was hit in the nose with a sheep before. You're so special! All jokes aside, I've been hit it the face with a few heads in my time and I know it hurts. It often prompts old words to pop out that we thought we'd overcome along with stars:) I'm glad you are ok.

Oh Paula, that looks so painful. I have been hit in the face a few times by goats, but never that bad. I hope it heals quickly. Your new barn will be great. We have not had a decent garden for 3 years either. I haven't even had the canner out for 3 or 4 years. I think we are downsizing this year too. ReplyDeleteI keep wanting a smaller garden but ours has never been as big as yours. It is way more stuff than we can eat. I can more than we ever eat over the winter. We have tomato juice that is 5 years old. Fortunately, we have a dark pantry to store it in.I have taken a fair share of it for flowers, though!
You have the most beautiful blue eyes. I am sorry we had to see them with that big ole boo boo. Will you have a shiner tomorrow?
Do we see a worker's comp suit in our future? LOL Sorry---I definitely do not think this is funny. It looks very painful. Hope it clears up quickly. :)

Oh my goodness! Ouch that hurt! You can't blame your sheep, but I can blame my husband - he dropped a box onto my nose just like yours from the attic. I was going to catch it and he let go before I was ready. I bled like a stuck pig and then my nose and both eyes blackened. You can get alot of mileage out of that, Paula, if you want!!!

While you're building, don't forget most of the round bale hay waste is from it sits on the ground. One of these days I hope to have a building where there's a cement floor to sit round bales on...hope springs eternal!

I'm so sorry about your nose getting hurt. The new sheep barn looks real nice. Those animals are so blessed to have a nice place to stay out of the weather. I hope your garden does well this year. We've also downsized our garden. We got it planted yesterday. I sure hope we have sufficient rain, sufficient sunshine to have a good garden.

Just realized I didn't comment on this post - probably too much empathy pain! I broke my cheek bone falling in the goat pen in February - your nose looks like it hurt - my face was so bad I think it made other people hurt! Sure got some weird looks in the grocery store - glad you weren't broken just bent a bit!
