I can't believe it's been so long since I last posted... where has September gone? We had another rainy and humid week last week, but Fall is really in the air now... the next few days are supposed to be dry and much cooler around here. Not really much going on right now... the chicks are growing, the grass still is too, and I've been cleaning out closets and taking some things to Goodwill. The biggest news around here lately- we made a major purchase a couple of weeks ago. Hubby bought some used equipment to cut and bale our own hay. It was quite a bit of money for us to spend up front, but we figured it would be better in the long run to be able to cut our own hay rather than having to keep buying it. Hubby is planning on cutting the field next to the house sometime this week to try everything out, so I'll post some pictures of him and his new toys. (*chuckle*) It won't be long until we will have to get our little honeybees ready for cold weather... Dad is going to help us get our hives "winterized" soon. He checked them last week and was amazed at how well they are doing, and said next spring we might even be able to split the largest one into two separate ones... that would give us three hives total! I feel so blessed! Here are a few pictures from this chilly Fall morning...

ReplyDeleteI ALWAYS enjoy seeing the pictures of all your critters around the farm. The silky babies are getting big. Glad you are getting some fall weather. We had it then this weekend it hit in the mid 90's YUCK...but a cool front has come back in and this morning it is quite breezy and cool. Our high is supposed to hit around 79, much better than the 90's!!
Hi Paula - I just love your farm! Your little silkies look like puff-balls with eyes! How exciting to be able to do your own hay. The fellow that lives across the road from us has about 300 acres of Tifton horse hay and he sells it to high-dollar horse breeders here in Texas. We have about 70 acres that he's converting from Coastal Bermuda to Tifton (half is already in Tifton). We can't afford the equipment, so HE is doing all the work and paying us a % of the profit. It just makes it so much easier for us right now. He takes good care of it, too, so it's a great benefit for us. We may be able to take over someday, but not right now.
ReplyDeleteI love your picture of the hay field with the barn up on the hill - nice shot - I'd love to stroll up that hill or have a picnic right in the middle of the pasture! It's supposed to get a little cooler here this week, too, down to the mid 80's and maybe the mid 50's at night. Texas, ya know. We've had Christmas's wearing shorts a few times. Looks kinda funny in our photos opening presents in shorts! Have a great week!

Love your sheep, can you believe, Hubby asked me a few days ago if I'd like sheep? Wonder, if I bought some and placed them in the barn if he'd notice. LOL He asked me, what I'd do with them, I told him; rack of lamb, lamb chops, ground lamb, I don't want to step on his toes by telling you all what his reply was, well, he won't mind; "much" Lamb chops, from sheep, yes, honey lamb chops come from sheep... I think he knew this and was just pulling my leg... ;)

I have two silkie hens. One is not laying yet, and the other just recently started laying. She is sitting on one egg, but I'm not sure if it's going to hatch. I took some of her first ones and put in the incubators, but they started leaking. I hope it does hatch. I'd love some silike chicks.

ReplyDeleteso, was that field a hayfield before? How much hay do you go through in a year?? I often wondered the numbers involved. I am a bad guessimator, so I don't know how much space it takes to make a bale. I'm assuming your do the regular bales and not the giant ones you have to fork around...

Do you have a problem with mice there? Our neighbors just harvested their alfalfa, plus with our chickens and pigeons...we are getting an influx of mice. I hate them!!

Sounds like lots of busy things going on on the Fraker Farm! I'm glad to see that fall is here, too~I'm plain tired of hot weather. We had lots of rain, too, but the last few days have been beautiful!

Your chickens are unique characters - our cluckers are pretty much all the same - 8 red hens who produce eggs galore! Sheep looking good and lovely pasture - but of course Smokey is the scene stealer. Good to have you back blogging -

ReplyDeleteI just love your new hay cutter! I think that is the neatest idea - to cut your own hay. I'll bet it's going to be so neat with all those hay bales sitting around your property! When I was a little girl, my cousin and I used to climb up on them and have picnics watching the cows in the field... thanks for the memory!
If your pup catches the rabbits, can you send him down here? Ours apparently ignore them and since hubby built the hen house, they've been getting in my garden!!! They've stripped our plants bare! UGH!!!
Got to say it again, those sheep are beautiful!!!

Hey, girlfriend! It has been a while, hasn't it? I empathize; busy, busy, busy! Plus this dial-up is making me crazy..... I love fall. It is the best time. I love going to the festivals, seeing all the crafts and prims. And the funnel cakes, caramel apples, and candy corn!!!! The rendevous at Lacey Park is always one of the best activities of the year.....Wish I could take you with me........***sigh***
