Friday Farm Fotos: Celebrating a Life

Morning Sun through the trees

It's the hardest thing about having animals...
when you have to say goodbye to one of them.

Two days ago we lost one of our ewes, Baby.
She had only been sick for a short time, but due to her age she was unable
to bounce back and had become very feeble.
Early that morning when I headed out the door to feed,
I glanced toward the field and saw her body laying motionless on the dew-covered ground.
For some reason she had wandered out of the barn during the night and fell,
and didn't have the strength to get back up.
Hubby spent the better part of the morning digging a grave for her...
and afterwards we talked about how hard it was going to be to look out the window
and not see her grazing with the rest of the gang.
But I can take comfort in the fact that she lived a very good life here with us;
and it's always better to think on the good rather than dwell on the bad.
So, today's post will not be a sad one,
but rather a happy one just remembering the life of one of God's little creatures.

Here is a picture of her when she was just a girl~
she had the most graceful long legs of any of our ewes.

Keeping watch over her week-old lamb, Rowdy.

Stopping to say "Hi" to Lily....

Her favorite thing- being out into the pasture in the cool, early morning
with the rest of the flock.

"Grieve not, nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you there."
- Isla Paschal Richardson

Sleep tight, sweet girl... you will never be forgotten.

Friday Farm Funny: This little game we play

My precious Edie, the sweetest sheep God ever made.

Every day it's the same routine:
I start the morning feeding chores at the big barn where Daisy and Edie's stall is located...
not because they're that special (which they kinda are) but because it's also adjacent to where the chicken feed is kept.

I give Daisy and Edie a little grain and a nice, tasty block of hay, and then it's on to the chicken coop.

But then I turn around to see they are following me...
abandoning their grain and hay and walking along beside me on the other side of the fence.
Almost as if they want something more from me...

Could it possibly be the sweet corn I have in my bucket which was supposed to be for the chickens? Hmmm?

Try looking at this next picture and NOT imagine that they are saying,
"Oh please, just a little nibble? Puh-leeese?"

And then, like a National Geographic special on sharks- the feeding frenzy begins.

Daisy is always the first to get her head through the fence and her tongue to the scoop...
(Edie is a little slow...)

The corn flies out of the scoop as she licks all she can before
Edie manages to get her head through the fence...

Then Edie mops up what's left...

Ever heard of a "milk moustache"?
This is very similar and it's called "corn lips".

Once the corn is all gone,
they turn and calmly walk back toward the barn;
back to their grain and hay......

*Sigh*
I feel so used....

Happy Good Friday, everyone!!

Friday Farm Fotos: The Great Unwashed

 Do you see it?

Do you see the beauty in raw wool?

I do...
The fibers are so soft, yet so strong....

And just needing to be washed and cleaned in order to serve another purpose.

But there is one problem....

The wool is still attached to the sheep.

Unruly sheep.

Fidgety sheep.

But that's okay... since shearing time is drawing near,
the combs and cutters have been sent off to be sharpened
and the clippers will be ready in no time.

"Did you say... clippers?"

"Clippers?"

This might be the year we start using sedatives...
(for us, not the sheep...)

Happy Friday, everyone!

Final Farm Fotos of 2011: No party animals here

As the sun sets on another year, we get ready to welcome in the new......

Thanks to the new lights that were put in a few weeks ago by Hubby and his brother (who just happens to be a great electrician), it looks like a festive party might be taking place in the sheep barn.

In reality, once the sheep come inside the barn for the night
and fill their bellies at the feed troughs, they will probably pass out until morning.

No big celebration for the chickens either,
who will have been asleep for nearly 6 hours by the time midnight rolls around.

There probably won't be much of a party inside the house....
just Hubby and I sipping coffee and sharing a box of these.
(Which for me beats being at Times Square on New Year's Eve any day.)

After stuffing ourselves with the worlds' best doughnuts,
me, Hubby, and Lily will snuggle by the fire and watch the festivities on TV.

Actually, we will probably start out watching a football game
then fall asleep halfway through the second quarter.
*Sigh*
We're such party animals around here...

So long, 2011.....

And hello, 2012!
Happy New Year, everyone!

Friday Farm Fotos: Looking for greenery

The sheep are starting to venture out into the pasture more these days, snatching up every little fresh green sprig that pops up.
And after eating dry hay for the past 4 months, I can't say that I blame them....

It's such a funny sight to see- they all come out of the barn at the same time, then split up to check their favorite spots.

Sweetie and Tiny head straight for the bottom of the hill....

While Lucy's twins, who are inseparable, go to the very far end of the pasture.

Meanwhile, Baby, Molly, and Dolly cover everything in-between.

Fret not, my little woolly flock,
Though dreary it may seem....
Soon all of the brown will disappear-
And give way to a field of green!

(And I do hope it's soon- we're almost out of hay! *Yikes*)

Happy Friday everybody!
