Friday Farm Fotos: Sunbathing Chickies

Despite the fact that it was only 40 degrees outside, the clouds opened up long enough for Whitey and Ruthie to get the urge to soak their old bones in the warm sunshine for a few minutes.

(And I mean old bones... by our best calculations they are at least 7 years old, maybe more- which in chickens years is ancient.)

This is the poultry equivalent to a weekend in Palm Springs....

12:05 p.m.-

12:11 p.m.-

12:15 p.m.- Tanned and refreshed, now back to the hunt for bugs.

Happy Friday, everybody!

  1. Paula-What a hoot! Or should I say-a cackle!? Do you have the only chickens in the world that do that???I've never heard of sunbathing chickens!
    You made my day!

  2. That sight would scare me to death. How do you know the difference between sunbathing and passing on to the great coop in the sky. I think I would be out there poking them with a stick to see what was going on. lol! Very funny. Thanks for showing the picture of them getting back up!

  6. Don't scare me like that. I looked at the picture before I started reading. I thought they had died. wow. I too did not know that they would do that. Very funny now that the fright has worn off. Oh by the way, one little baby bird hatched by I don't think it made it. I don't want to disturb them too much. We will see. Have a good day. Lisa

  11. I'm so glad to see someone else keeps their old farm animals around long after their usefulness is over. I have a Blue Orphington rooster that is old but he still meets me at the gate and wants a treat from my hand,he's just like a dog.
I also have an old retired milk cow that is nearing 20 years old as a pet !
    Have a blessed weekend.

  18. How funny! I remember the first time I saw a bird sunbathing on the ground. I noticed it through the window, and went running out to see if it was injured. It quickly flew away. When seeing it again, it dawned on me what it was doing. ;-Þ

  23. I sure could use a weekend in Palm Springs or any place actually, other than the current locale -smile-. Forgive me, Paula, that sounds crass; truly, I'm not complaining but Dave and I are SO ready to be home. Counting down the days.
The photo of the chickens stretched out gave me a smile; I don't think I've ever seen them lay full prone in the sun. Can't blame them, bet those boards were nice and warm so they had two sides toasty.
Have you thought of little bathing suits? I can just see them now...

  24. Bless their hearts--my chickens love to sun bathe too but I’ve never seen it quite like this. They are lounging and envisioning the ocean in their minds. Good for them-making the most of a 40 degree sunburst :)

  25. Oh I love seeing my chickens take full advantage of a good sunny spot, and your pictures are fantastic!

I know a man who has raised and shown chickens all his life and he had one very pretty , show-winning white leghorn that was 25 years old!I have had a few who got to almost 8 years old and who knows how long they might have lived if the coyotes or raccoons had not eaten them.

The sun-bathing chickens kind of flatten themselves out like our cats do.

  26. I've only seen mine spread out like that when they are dust-bathing. I would probably think they were dead if they did that anywhere else! Also, I adore my apron/bonnet! I want to get some photos wearing it as a bonnet!

    Lorilee
