Friday Farm Fotos: Broody

It's springtime on the farm.

To a banty (or bantam) hen that means only one thing-
time to hatch some babies.

It doesn't matter if they are sitting on their eggs, someone else's eggs, eggs that are bigger than their bums can possibly cover,
NO eggs.....
These broody girls are dedicated to the cause of motherhood.

Quick- snatch that egg before someone puts their bum on it!

Of course, it's not always such a bad thing...
there is a perk that comes from all this madness.

*SQUEEEEEAL*

Happy Friday, everyone!

  5. What a sweet chick! I enjoyed the pictures so much. My long time girlfriend from college and her parents raised chickens in Maysville, GA and I loved to visit them.

  10. That is a hoot, you have those nice boxes all lined with shavings or straw and they go and lay eggs in a roll of wire. What gives?

Question, How do you know what eggs to take for cooking and which to live for hatching? I would hate to go to crack open an egg and it be a baby in there. I guess you have to keep up daily which eggs you will take and leave. So much to know about farming.

Great photos of your hens, too cute the box with 3 hens. Guss those eggs will never see the light of day with 3 mom's there to take turns sitting.

    God Bless your day,

  12. Thank you so much for sharing these. My family says I have enough to do and we don't eat enough eggs to justify "growing" our own. So I have to enjoy them through people like you who share with me.

  20. The first two pictures are beautiful---never thought I would say that about chickens! Now the mafia girls do look scary, but I'm sure they can't be all that bad. It's a riot where you find some of the eggs, too. I wish I could pick up that darling little chickie. Fantastic Friday Fotos, Paula!

  21. I don't know how I lived without chickens, love mine to death. We have one banty hen and she just hatched two eggs. When babies are grown maybe I will buy a mix of bantam hatching eggs for her to sit. Your photos are great!

  22. Oh my, those eggs laid in the fence row won't be easy to cover! What a little cutie pie. Doesn't that make it a little easier to pay the cost of their feed?
    Have a great weekend sister...

  28. aww - pretty little chick - I've got the "get new chickens" fever and don't know what I'll do with the ones we have - can't justify feeding them since so few eggs being produced but I definitely won't eat these gals (unless prices keep going up on food and feed!) I'll just enjoy your chicks and keep hoping - your silky banties are SO cute.

  34. I just realized that I was getting comments on my blog! Thanks for all your kind words~:0) I enjoy visiting your blog too, and I wanted to let you know that because of your post about the price of feeding your chickens going up, I have decided not to get my own chickens (which I've wanted to do since we moved out of town) and just support some of our "local chickens" and buy eggs them! I'll just look at your pictures of your beautiful girls, and maybe someday the economy will improve...it has to, hasn't it?
