Friday Farm Fotos: A little "Biddy" surprise....

If you've read this blog for any time at all, you know my love for baby chicks borders on insanity.
However, I try to contain myself so I won't become one of those people on that Animal Hoarders show that has 800 chickens running around.
I keep the Silkie population down by gathering the eggs as soon as I can because there is nothing those hens love more than to go broody and hatch babies.

But I think I've been outsmarted.

One day while cleaning weeds out around the coop I heard some familiar peeping noises coming from nest box # 3......

Surprise.

Yep, definitely outsmaah-ted.

Apparently, one of those sneaky little hens had an egg tucked under her so tightly that the egg went unnoticed during my nightly inspection of the nest boxes- even after I stuck my hand under her and felt around.
(Which I'm sure she enjoyed very much...)

*Sigh*

Well, you know me- I wouldn't want a baby chick to have to grow up all alone...
*snicker snort*
So, I let a few eggs lay around until someone got in the mood to sit on them.
(which of course took about 5 minutes....)

And a couple of weeks later-

You know what they say- chickens are like potato chips, you can't have just one.
Or twenty.

Happy Friday, everyone!
(peep!)

  1. Nothing like a chick to brighten your days.

Phyllis was struck with (I think) the nerve strain of Mareks. She and Morticia had been vaccinated but...ya know how that goes. She was fine throughout the day and by nightfall, gone.

  2. LOL, you are so much like someone else I know, my mother, who adores those cute little fur balls. She set a hen in late summer and those lil darlin's are scooting around the yard after their Mama and learning all about scratching and scurrying for food. Did you know that one of those lil ones can scarf down an entire grasshopper in one choke? Hilarious...you would not think it was possible for a chick to engulf something as large as itself. Ha!
    Loved this entry girl!

  17. You know, in spite of the fact that I see baby chicks about six flocks each year, 70,000 plus each time, I still think they're sweet; little beady eyes and fluff! These are really cute, being a color I've never seen. Do they get very big when grown?

  22. Soooo cute! No wonder you can't resist them. We have four half grown chicks left (since the pups accidentally killed one) and one of them is white. We don't have any other white chickens, so this is very interesting for us!

  24. Paula, I must get me some silkies, It doesn't take much to send us chicken farm girls spinning, lol I truly love surprises like this. I got my love for chickens from my grandmother she always had them, and sold eggs to supplement her income.
I always enjoy your FFF, enjoy your weekend.

  30. Awe, I don't think, I've ever seen a grey baby chick... so adorable!

I had one egg out of 12 hatch this summer. We have a baby that is a few weeks old now; the name is Tweety.

Poor lil fella is all alone, I hope when the day comes to place it outside the others will be nice about it.

Hope, you're staying dry, & safe ... We are gusty and rainy here, but all is well.

    Blessings,
    Mel

I finally got my husband talked into letting me have chickens. He is remodeling a old coop for me now. After reading on your blog about your cute fuzzy bottoms, you know I am going to have to find some of them!
