Rainy days were made for napping... just ask Lily. :)
This weekend brought rain... lots of rain. But that's okay~ things were starting to get a little dry around here, so the garden, grass and flowers all got a good drink. I'm sure the bees were happy to be able to fly out of the hive and down to the ground for water... a very short trip for them. And the sheep were loving the cooler temperatures...
The biggest news around here this weekend was that the spillway was opened at Norris Dam, which is just up the road from where we live. This is a very rare occurrence and only happens when the water levels get so high they have to "lower" the lakes around here. It's an awesome sight... people drive for miles around to see it because it is like a huge (and very loud) waterfall. I think I overheard someone on the news say that there are something like 15,000 gallons of water per second coming over the top.... no wonder it is so loud!
I think Lily was afraid we were going to throw her in for her weekly bath... *grin*
Thanks to the weather I got to spend some quality time in my sewing room with Ruby.
You remember Ruby don't you...
the new sewing machine Hubby got for my anniversary present?
*squeal*
I tried my hand at making some pinwheel blocks for the first time....
Don't you just love this fabric?
But I wasn't too sure how I was going to like the blocks of different colors and patterns together, so I decided to try making a row of the same color with a contrasting border.
Here is what I came up with...
The bottom border in not sewn on yet, so that is why the red blocks look too big.
They will be smaller once the border is finished.
Now I'm in a pickle because I can't decide if I like this better than the different blocks together..... what do you think?
It is just going to be a small 9-block wall quilt...
Oh, and I also started working on a little doll dress....
but you will have to wait to see who will be wearing it.

We live near a dam to and they are letting it off.. The water is quite high in the lake now..Sure do love your quilt pieces.. Started one myself but it's on hold as usual.. Hope you have a nice week. ReplyDeleteThat was a lot of rain - we had a river in the dip in our pasture for a while, but like you said, we needed rain. I've been at Norris Dam when they let the water out. I couldn't hear a thing but the water. It's really impressive.

Oh, how I wish I could have seen and heard the release of water! I know it is such a powerful experience. Lake Red Rock in northern Iowa does the same thing and on the occasions we've been there, I was awestruck! There are pelicans that gather as well as eagles. And fishermen, too. It is just like constant thunder. I love it!

Love your pinwheels and I guess my OCD would want all the squares to be alike but you are so creative--why not make both and test them out to see which one you like best?!!!

Forceful water like this scares me, so I'd be standing WAY back from it.

My favorite is blue blocks if it is going to be a wall hanging, a full size quilt would be ok with the variety of blocks.

What ever rain you suffered through this past weekend, is now is my neck of the woods. So the dogs napped and I fiddled around and totally lost a whole day. Nothing like a mental health day to get the creative juices flowing. I love that you are Ruby have been busy making wonderful pinwheels. I do admire the fact that you can sew! May you have sunshine the rest of the week. Lucy says hi to Lily!

Lily is so cute! Love your sewing machine and what sweet fabric choices. We had lots of rain too and we were forced to stay indoors and get a lot of unpacking done!

I love the scrappy blocks. They go along w/the feel of real life pinwheels. I think the blue would be better with a different color of washing...brighter maybe. How about pinwheels all in the same color family but varied fabrics? I see several pinwheel quilts in your future!

ReplyDeleteOoooh, love seeing that machine getting a workout! I had to take mine in because I had some thread shredding inside because I was trying to use up an old spool. Shame! :-) Didn't take but a minute for her to locate the problem and sell me three spools of good thread in the color I had been using! :-) I like the stripping with the squares. I think that will be really pretty. And that doll cap is precious.
