For today's special Songbird post, I'm featuring the Tennessee state bird~ the Mockingbird.
We have an abundance of these wonderful (but loud!) bug catchers in our yard, and they usually stand still long enough to let you take their picture better than most birds. But be careful getting too close to their nest... they're aggressive and will let you know you're too close for comfort by swooping toward you, and have even been known to give a perceived predator a swift peck on the head.

Bird is that kind of animal that we always like. I believe that you can hear from them if some animal is close around.

I miss all of the mockingbirds at our last home. Not quite so many here, so it is twice as enjoyable when I do hear one.

i have a death wish on our mocking bird, not all the time, just when he gets stuck of one song for an hour, talk about long... they can sing over 400 songs, and ours can sound like our telephone.
ReplyDeleteI live in Wisconsin...and no I am sad to say I have NEVER heard a mockingbird. My son, Atticus, he would like to see and hear a mockingbird too. :-) I had him look at your beautiful photos, so he knows what one looks like.

ReplyDeletealso state bird of Texas and I luv 'em - sometimes they'll have such an intricate long song. Not many in my yard - mostly cardinals here but there is one who likes to serenade us into church for the early service every Sunday!

They really do sing there little hearts out! Have you seen them go after the hawks and other "bigger" birds that dare come towards their nests,,,truly fearless.

ReplyDeleteWe used to have a mockingbird sit on the fence and fuss at us as we had our coffee on the back porch. I always looked forward to seeing him every morning! This went on for a long time and then one day he didn't come. :(

I've always loved mockingbirds! You got some wonderful shots! Really nice. Hope you are having a great Memorial Day weekend. I wanted to let you know about the newest bee news...A bee researcher in Illinois has had his bees confiscated by the state without a warrant and killed his queens. He was researching the effects of Monsanto on the bees. I pinned a piece on my Board on Pinterest if you want to check it out! AWFUL! Russell and I went to the March Against Monsanto rally yesterday with a ton of signs to try to educate people. It's the first time I've ever done anything like that, and it felt good. A small thing, but "something."

Mockingbirds are so sleek. You captured some very good pictures. I think the mockingbird deliberately posed for you knowing itself to be quite lovely.
