Like many of you I am a dedicated follower of Susan over at Farmgirl Fare. When I read her posts about the wonderful breads she turns out, it makes me have this burning desire to be a bread maker, too...... I make decent sweet loaf breads from time to time, and of course, biscuits and cornbread, but I would really love to not be so intimidated by bread. In fact I would love to feel confident enough to try all the wonderful breads I see on Susan's blog. While Hubby was off from work last week, we ate at one of my favorite restaurants- McAlisters. They're a little pricey on some things, but I love eating there because they serve delicious creamy soups in homemade bread bowls and it is absolutely wonderful. I found a recipe similar to McAlisters' famous potato soup, and I've been wanting to try it out in the new Lodge dutch oven Hubby bought for me last week. (squeal) Rainy days get me in the mood to bake, so since it was wet and gloomy outside my dining room window yesterday I thought, "why not try to make your own bread bowls?"
I searched the internet for homemade bread bowl recipes, and finally found one that sounded easy enough for a beginner like me.
This was the start of a very messy experiment. You know things are not looking good when you make this kind of a boo boo just opening the bag of flour.
It's called Bacon Potato chowder... if you can't see this picture very well but would like the recipe, let me know and I'll be happy to email it to you. (My email address is on my profile page.)
Oh YUM! That looks so good! I too am too chicken to bake my own yeast bread. I used to make whole grain breads back in my vegetarian days, but now??? Maybe after reading this i will get up the courage to try again. I find all cooking is messy, and sometimes i want to run away too! But it is almost always worth the work. Your kitchen (even when it is messy) looks so warm and full of love. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! That looks delish! You are so lucky to have such a cute kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI always make a huge mess when I cook, especially with flour. I don't know why, but I can't do it neatly.
ReplyDeleteIt looks really great! I'll bet it tasted wonderful too!
GOOD FOR YOU!!!! They look INCREDIBLE!! And it all looks delicious, too! I'm totally a recipe junkie, but since discovering Recipezaar and paying for membership perks, I don't allow myself to buy anymore cookbooks or magazine subscriptions, but Taste of Home was always my favourite. I miss that magazine..... {sigh}
ReplyDeleteI've always been intimidated by bread, too. I have a bread machine that gets used half a dozen times a week, but I'd love to actually bake bread the old-fashioned way.
Sounds wonderful! My son taught me how to make a good loaf of bread while he was visiting...I have not tried yet, but will soon. I, too, have always been intimidated with bread making, but I figure it is time to bit the bullet and "git er done"!

Don't ya just love your KitchenAide? especially for kneading? I love homemade bread and soups, I'll be trying that Bacon Poatao Chower for sure. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThe other day at a little Italian Restaurant in town, I had some Sweet Onion Soup. Yum. Want to try that too.
Makes my mouth water. You are so special!
ReplyDeleteWow! I am totally impressed! Looks WONDERFUL...I just don't know if I'd have the patience to go through all those steps!
ReplyDeleteYour mess is just my normal kitchen! LOL - wonderful that you are expanding your repertoire of breads and Susan's guidance is priceless. I'm sure the results were as tasty as could be - soup and bread bowls sound like a good idea for a Christmas gathering we have planned! Thanks! YUMMO
ReplyDeletePaula, those look so good!! We have a McAlisters, too but have't tried their bread bowls
ReplyDeleteCome over to my blog, I've anominated you for an award!
That looks wonderful. I noticed something in your kitchen photo...SNOW! I am SO jealous!
ReplyDeleteGod bless you Friend Farm Chick!
Laura
I'm afraid of bread and pie crust. That soup and those bread bowls look yummy. I would have had flour all over that cute rooster rug.
ReplyDeleteI Lurve, Love, Luff, homemade bread and have only recently had any luck at making it :)
ReplyDeleteWay to "keep it real"!
What a heart-warming post. I love bread, soup and cookbooks - so this is great!!! Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so good!
ReplyDeleteI love to bake bread, I started about a year ago baking for my family of 7, and I will never go back. It was a rough start, but over the months I have learned a lot and I think I turn out a pretty good loaf of bread.
At least my family will eat it...
They look yummy! I'll let you come to my house and make a mess anytime.
ReplyDeleteI know a big part of your problem...you clean up! If you'd stop fooling around with that part, it would all go so much easier!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea...no McAlisters here...you could use the bread bowls for chili too...guess I need to get my bread machine out..you are getting us all inspired, Paula....and your kitchen isn't that bad...just shows you've been cooking!
ReplyDeleteLet me start by saying your kitchen looks great. I like LIGHT colors in a kitchen. It says "I'm clean" even when it's not. Also the rug in front of your sink is adorable.
ReplyDeleteMy bread maker came with a recipe book. There is a bread bowl recipe in it but I haven't tried it yet. But of course now I have to because of you! Wouldn't you know it, I found a recipe for slow cooker corn chowder last night. It's kismet. But perhaps potato chowder would be even better! YUM! Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your adventure in baking bread bowls.
That looks incredible! I feel so lazy for using a bread maker. I just have to look at a flour bag for it to poof out all over the kitchen. Looks like it was worth the mess :)> Awesome kitchenaid btw!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm.....sounds so good. Soup is my absolute favorite. It is how I judge restaurants! LOL---I can hardly wait to go to Subway in winter for the soup and Arby's always has Wisconsin cheese soup. Panera serves soup in a bread bowl. It is sooooo good. Looks like dh is really enjoying it. I could stop by for one of those 2 bowls left........:)
ReplyDeleteHi Paula:
ReplyDeleteI don't see that much of a mess. What I do see is that delicious bread and soup!!!!!
I love the view out of that dining room window.
Ginger
I too aspire to be a bread maker. Great post and if you thik your messy come to my house!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I have just got to try that! I think my stomach just growled! LOL
ReplyDeleteIts funny how you can make me smile just baking bread!
Blessings,
Lea
Oh boy, I'm intimidated by anything that says YEAST... I tremble! I was so glad that my daughter (who is 10, I might add) decided she wanted to make bread. I can let her do it, and learn from her mistakes. hehe!! Thanks for sharing this yummy yummy idea! If you can do it, so can I, right? Although I might need a new dutch oven?? *grin*
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious! What a lovely blog - I am just crazy about animals. Right now I think The Little Terrorist is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so YUMMY Paula! I will gladly clean the kitchen if I can come over for dinner!!
ReplyDeleteThat looks good!!! No, it looks scrumptious!!! I'm going to check out that recipe as soon as I leave you. My kids would love this they are always wanting them when we go to the festival. I haven't had much luck with breads but I do keep trying. Seems like one time it turns out great and the next it just doesn't rise well. I'll be sending you an email soon for the bacon potato chowder. Better get going I have a pot of chili on something we all wanted after a frigid morning at the parade. And also a pumpkin pie in the oven requested by the 7 year old. Then I heard from the 14 year old if you are making him a pumpkin pie will you make me an apple cobbler. So I guess that is next on the list this evening. Oh yeah don't worry about a messy kitchen it just shows that you actually use it. lol Take Care :)
ReplyDeleteWow that looks great!! I would have thought you were a pro!! I love your kitchen its so cozy looking.
ReplyDeleteHi Paula, your dinner looks so good! Your bread came out great and the soup looks so heavenly!
ReplyDeleteI always make a big mess too when I cook.
Love, Ann
That looks so good - it makes me hungry. I don't think your kitchen looked messy. It looked like you were having a good time!!
ReplyDeleteOh man. I think that if SOMEONE (HINT HINT) would come to our house and make me bread bowls that I would totally clean up afterwards. Totally. :)
ReplyDeleteThe soup sounds so good and your bread bowls look wonderful! Makes me very hungry!! I just love your kitchen! blessings, Kathleen
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous. I am still sticking to biscuits. Bread making just ain't my speciality. lol..
ReplyDeleteI love your kitchen and especially that chicken rug.
Have a great day.
Pam
I make bread all the time, just hadn't thought of making bread bowls. Good for you! They look great! Maybe I'll make some for our Christmas Eve dinner. We do a fun formal dinner - something we don't do at other times of the year. The bread bowls will be nice for the soup course.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
P.S. I have lots of flour to clean up each time I make bread. I've been told it's a sign of a good baker. lol
To show you how backwoods I am, I've never even heard of bread bowls! I made a very similar potato soup last week. I was going to cook mine in my Lodge dutch oven, also, but it was still out in the trailer from our camping trip last month, and I was too lazy to go out and get it, so I used a different pan. Congrats on the new dutch oven, by the way, I love mine!
ReplyDeleteI also love your kitchen. I covet your kitchen, spilled flour and all.
You've been tagged!
ReplyDelete(And if nineteen other people already did, don't tell me, ok? LOL)
Great job Paula!!! They look soooo delicious!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow that's what I call YUMM-O! I have made the Bacon Potato Chowder, but never thought to make bread bowls for it, Mmmm Mmmm Good!
ReplyDeleteI just love visiting you, I don't think I have ever left your posts without a chuckle. When I use my kitchen aid mixer ( took me 5 years to get hubby to buy me one for Christmas, best gift ever) the flour isn't just all over the floors, island, cupboard doors, but all over me also. As a matter of fact, have you ever got your face to close to the mixing bowl as your pouring the flour into the wet ingredients, only to get a face full of flour dust? Thank God for glasses (great eye protection).
Paula, I see roosters in your kitchen~
The sign of a good cook is a BIG mess......I am there with you sister.....I can't make anything with out having it everywhere!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe made the Potato Chowder last night for supper, it was great. Didn't tackle the bread bowl but will when the week isn't so hectic!
ReplyDeleteHope to see you all at the Fraker Christmas gathering!
Merry Christmas
Evelyn (Fraker) Gibson
Looks like you did a great job. I love that you use a cast iron dutch oven. I love to make soups and stews in mine!
ReplyDeleteOh, Miss Paula!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are just too cool for school, girl!!!
Seriously........ this was only your first attempt?!?!? I don't know what to say except, "WOW!"
I've been craving potato soup and now you've inspired me to make some! Thank you, I needed that kick in the pants!!! Really, I did...
Many Blessings,
Julie
Who cares about the mess when the end result is homemade soup and fresh baked bread????? Wow, does that look good!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad someone else is a messy cook! I just can't help it --- stuff goes everywhere. LOVED all the pictures!!!
Cora
Hi Paula,
ReplyDeleteMmmmmmmmmmm!!! Looks so yummy! I love homemade bread - the smell of it baking is just heaven. Have a Merry Christmas!!
Merry
Oh, this just looks so good - my mouth is watering.
ReplyDeleteAnd I read somewhere that a messy kitchen is the sign of an imaginative and creative cook. I like that! :-)
