A sure sign for me that Fall is on it's way is the decrease in our hours of daily sunlight ... the sunrises are getting later and sunsets are getting earlier. I seem to notice this now more than ever- when I worked outside the home and off the farm my day was ruled by a clock, but now my life ruled by the sun- time to rise and get busy is just before daybreak, when the animals are also awakening and starting to stir. Time to call it a day and head inside for the evening is when the last rays of light peek over the tops of the trees behind the barn. One thing that has always fascinated me about this time of year is the phenomenon known as autumnal equinox, where the earth tilts to a different angle in it's orbit, moving our Northern Hemisphere away from the sun and causing the sun to appear to be in a little off-center in the sky... making the shadows lengthen and become more noticeable than in the summertime when the sun always seems to be right overhead.
I've kept my camera close at hand this week, trying to capture some of the shadows I've noticed that seem to be suddenly appearing out of nowhere....

Ugh. I'm not a fan of our hemisphere tilting away from the sun! Who do we need to talk to about rectifying that??!

Beautiful pictures Paula. Our driveway is covered with leaves - sometimes it's even hard to see the pavement - that's when I know fall is on its way.
ReplyDeleteI love how the sunlight filters through the trees as they lose their leaves. There gets to be more sun as the days pass. Our neighbors to the east have a hedge of arborvitae that pretty much blocks out light from the east year round so I have to be enjoying my afternoon sun. Since I don't get up early, that is perfect for me. I also love to drive down the old river roads. The trees changing colors make it so beautiful. The smells of the woods driving by are so distinct. I love fall! Your pics are great!

ReplyDeletePaula- Your farm looks so neat and tidy! And with the long shadows comes some much needed cool weather. I know I can use it and so can the animals. I hear through the grape vine that you have meet one of my sheep buddies and best friends Linda Cox. She's a jewel! Hope your breeding season goes well and that you have lots of babies in the spring! ReplyDeleteI've got long shadows, too, Paula. The light comes in my kitchen window this time of year at an angle and streams in the patio door. I usually start noticing the change in late August. Makes the sky a different color blue, too. Makes one feel like snuggling down and being cozy and making yourself a hot drink!

I love what you wrote about the days beginning and days end, also. I'm sure that it is the way that our pioneers lived...early to bed and early to rise. I am an advocate for getting up early and greeting the morning :)
I have certainly noticed the longer shadows recently. Also, I think there is a crispness, and a yummy smell at Fall time. Maybe it's the gardens maturing, or the fields being cut... lots of reasons I'm sure :)

Oh my your pics are awesome! Seems like it's a bit earlier this year I've already had to blow some leaves. Just unheard for these parts. The nights and early mornings seem to have a bit of a nip to them. I won't complain because it still gets into the high 80's or 90's during the day. It's getting dark earlier which I'm not a fan of! The kudzu seems to have stopped growing and looks like it's starting to turn brown or wilting to nothing. Oh and the sure sign is..... football is on all weekend! Take Care :)

ReplyDeleteWow, those are lovely photos! I'll have to go to the beach and take some in exchange! I was thinking gripey thoughts that all I see are yucky cars in the parking lot outside my window and then I remembered that I live not far from the beach! :D

I have noticed the dark coming earlier, gotta remember to pen the ducks up sooner so the coyotes don't get them! Yes, the sooner-coming dark also affects egg production in my chickens. So yes, I very much notice the change but have not appreciated the shadows as you have. Great photos, now I will look more closely at the shadows~

ReplyDeleteFabulous post and lovely photos. Days are shortening and my body is slowing down; I am such a daughter of the seasons. I want to sleep when it's dark and work while it's light. I bought OTT lights some years ago and they are wonderful!

Being from the Northeast, signs of fall have already started to appear. As the geese fly south, you can hear them quaking their goodbye's. Oh, how I love the smell of the maple trees in the fall. I love country drives, when the trees change their appearances, from green to bright yellows, reds, orange, etc.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I do not like the tilting of the sun... I do not like shorter days and cold windy and wet weather...
I do like your shadow pictures, now I'll have to look around and see what shadows fall around our farm. Thanks for sharing.

You have some beautiful canisters! You know, I'd print that picture of the shadow of the flowers on the floor. It's beautiful and would look great with a mahogany colored mat and wood frame.
