Well, our little terrorist is at it again.... she's decided to give motherhood another try. This time she is sitting on one of her own eggs, but she has also taken two LARGE green eggs hostage as well. I told Hubby that if she wants to be broody, then broody she will be. We waited until dark last night, then moved her (and her hostages) to her own private little brood coop away from everybody else. This way she will have her own space, and won't be scaring Sarge and the rest of the girls away from the nest. And let me tell you, Sarge and the girls are very happy about it, although it's hard to tell from this picture....
I'm also very anxious to see how these chicks turn out. After all, this is the father......
Hamburger, you should really be ashamed of yourself. I mean, SHE'S HALF YOUR SIZE FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE.
But I know you're not the least bit ashamed, so don't even try to hide.
I'm enjoying your chicken stories and chicken pictures. It's been years since I've had chickens (as a child), and I've alway loved them. ;-Þ

What a riot! It will be interesting to see what hatches from the little hostage taker's own egg. Hamburger is a handsome fellow! I hope our little Silver turns out so nice-looking. Was Hamburger a free mystery chick? That's how we got ours. He's got lots of personality and thinks he's the biggest bird in the flock, even though he's the smallest!

Amy- Hamburger was our mystery chick, too! We ordered all large breed pullets (25 of them) and right in the middle of them was this funny-looking little fellow! It has been a riot having him around. He is a gentle rooster, too... a real loverboy. (Most of them are rough with the hens, if you know what I mean...)

She looks serious about her broodiness. hee hee. I think that momma hens and their chicks are so cute. I hope that in time one of our chickens will go broody. I figured we've got enough variety, SOMEONE will get a wild hair! (feather?)

Paula, I love Hamburger. He is beautiful!!!! Chickens are the best, aren't they? I also have a hen that keeps moving from one pile of eggs to another. I can't get her off the last pile because she is downright indignant about it. (peck your hand off.) Can't wait to see your new chicks. Love your pictures.

i was given a standard cochin roo last month along with a tiny little bantam hen. my partridge cochin hatched out a batch of chicks over the weekend, and what do you think we saw? a little black cochin chick out of one of the tiny hens eggs! lol

and talk about a hen who wants to set, the little hen who hatched out the chicks? well, i brought the chicks into the brooder and set her on the nest where the tiny hen lays.....and right down on those eggs she went and hasn't moved an inch! i swear, that little girl would try to hatch a golf ball if i asked her to!
You go, Hamburger! How funny! I hope the 'little hostage' gets what she wants. I'm pulling for her!

ReplyDeleteAre the green from specific hens? I know we bought what the lady called Easter eggs--all colors but delicious--from a place called the Little Red Barn on a drive one day. Very interesting. Grandkids were leery to try colored eggs...funny kids.

Paula, you had me laughing with this post. I once had a tough little hen like her. She challenged every one.The rooster, the hens, the dog, me.... She and I had feathers flying when she decided she would make her nest outside of the hen house yard. So after losing 20 pounds chasing her, my arm and hand etched with her signature by her beak, and a yard full of feathers, she finally settled on the nesting hutch I had prepared for her and hatched out some cuties. And then, the fight was on again. She was so protective of her babies.Whew, what a toughie.Needless to say, she never fell prey to a coyote. I just love your beautiful rooster. blessings, Kathleen
