Here is where I start to lose my mind... I know what my better judgement says, but my heart seems to
Yes, I know... but when does anyone really have too many chickens?
At least that's what I keep telling myself...
And Hubby....
One-day-old Rhode Island Red pullets. (Pullet is a fancy term for a young hen.)
No rooster needed- just add water and plenty of feed for these girls and one day they will lay the biggest, tastiest brown eggs around.... oh, nothing against the little eggs that come from my fuzzy-bottomed Silkies, but it does take 2 of them to make one good sized egg.
See?
I really do listen when the voice of reason speaks!! *giggle*
*Sigh*....
Those of you who have been reading my blog for a long time may remember the story of why I'm so crazy about chickens.... if not, go here.
Happy Friday everybody, from me 'n the peeps!
Awwwww new babies! They are just TOO cute. Lexi loves going to the farm store around here too because she always begs for the baby chicks. I bet their BIG eggs are quite tasty and how neat to have a never ending supply of fresh eggs. I LOVE eggs.
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday to you too Paula and I hope you and the critters have a wonderful weekend.♥
They are PRECIOUS Paula!!!! I have the weak spot too for all furry babies, I don't even go in the feed stores once the bunnies arrive!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf I could, I'd be right there with ya! I've never owned chickens, although I found one when I was a kid and took it home, mom made me give it to a farmer!:(
ReplyDeleteDaughter and I have even tried to figure out how risky it would be to keep a couple in the back yard!
Alas, town living and a small yard are no environs for poultry! They sure are cute when they're small:)
Debbie
Your chicks are very cute. We are going to get ore chickens too. But we have to wait until may, or the extreme cold will definately kill them. I hope you enjoy your new "little Jewels."
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Goodness!! I would love to pick one of these little babies up and hold it to my ear!! Havent' done that since I as a young'un.
ReplyDeleteWhat cuties! Can you post a picture of your chicken coop, as I would love to see the size and design as I am thinking about getting some pet chickens. Can't wait to hear what their names will be---but how to tell them apart!??
ReplyDeleteThose are so cute. I can see why your heart screams.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could just go to the hen house and collect a good fresh egg.
Photos are super
Aww...just look at those sweet little fuzzies! How precious they are, Paula! Sure would love to get my hands on one of them! Too sweet!
ReplyDeleteOh yay, new babies!! They are so stinking cute, I wish I could buy some every year. They don't have babies here yet... but I am waiting!
ReplyDeleteI love, love baby chicks! Congrats on you new little ones!
ReplyDeletethese photos just inspire me to get some hens myself..trying to figure out how to keep them cool though as our summers smoke here...our yard is certainly large enough even though we live in town....they are sure precious babies....nothing cuter than a fluffy chick....
ReplyDeleteThey are so cute. I can't wait to watch them grow up. I have been reading about urban chicken keepers. I really would love fresh eggs but our city will not allow them. We really can not wait to move from here to land where we make all the decisions! I would love to have some chickens, a larger garden and a place for dogs to bark until their heart's content. You are so lucky!
ReplyDeleteOH! I just love those little chicks. I would like to have a lot of them if I had a place to keep them. They just melt my heart. Nothing speaks spring louder that the cheeping of little chicks. How lovely and cute.
ReplyDeleteWhat cuties! So very sweet. I hope you will have a very nice weekend Paula.
ReplyDeleteOh, I think I'm going to want to get some new babies, too. I started with 12 last spring. 6 ended up as roosters. We sold 5 and kept one. In the last month, a fox has gotten our rooster and three of our hens. One in broad daylight while the kids were in the yard!
ReplyDeleteSo, I'll be wanting some newbies.
Oh, they're the cutest little peeps ever!
ReplyDeleteBlessings to you and yours from the holler.
ADORABLE!!! These are so cute! And I knew they were Rhode Island Reds! My mama, whenever she got a bee in her bonnet and wanted to raise chickens - yet again - she always got RIR's because she said they were the best layers, and had the best temperament of all the chicks. Brings back memories!
ReplyDeleteI love going to the post office and listening to the roosters crow. It makes the postal employees so crazy and that makes me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorta sick thataway.
wow, i love chiks too. and chickens. i grew up always having them around and sometimes needs to chase them out the kitchen, haha!
ReplyDeletebtw girl, perhaps you'd like to win some fancy accessories? we have a contest going :)

Marcia
Oh, oh, oh...Sooooo fuzzy and cute!
ReplyDeleteI love to go to Orschelin's and check out the chicks....and bunnies and baby ducks and baby turkeys. It's right up there with puppies and kittens. oooooh, and lambs and kids and calves and colts.....Spring is the best, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteThey are darling--love the red feathers. can't wait to see how beautiful they are full-grown but no hurry. Let them stay chicks as long as possible.
:) ★ Linda
I love new fuzzy babies! So cute! I totally understand how you couldn't resist, I probably wouldn't be able to either. My cousin already tells me I have too many, but I still want more!
ReplyDeletelol I know what you mean my heart speaks louder 2. They are very cute. I look forward to watching them grow. : )
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about that, 2 Silkie eggs for every 1 R.I. Red! I love my bantams too, but gotta have those standard breeds for REAL eggs for breakfast!
ReplyDeleteI am with you sister, I just cannot pass up a good little chick-soon-to-become-great-egg-laying-chicken!And they're sooooooooooooooo CUTE!
chicks are wonderful - I can resist because we realized this year - for the two of us 8 hens lay far too many eggs! But they are beauties and you'll be living it up with those big brown bursts of flavor and fresh!
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing more adorable and tugs at the heart strings than baby chickens!..........as well as baby lambs, cats, dogs.........all babies! blessings,Kathleen
ReplyDeleteAin't they the cutest when they sleep?
ReplyDelete~Randy
PRECIOUS!! Now we are gonna have to think of 6 more names :)
ReplyDeleteTracey
oh my goodness, I'm off the farm in 6 weeks. No more baby chickies for me anytime soon :(. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteOh, they are Sooooo cute! I'm crazy about them too and am hoping we have a bunch this spring! :D
ReplyDeletejust found your amazing blog and read the reason why you're hopelessly drawn to chickies! it was so well written!!
ReplyDeletehave you ever had guineas?

ReplyDeleteYou lucky girl!!
Patricia :o)
OOOO..I want these little ones so bad!!!! I really need to get some advice from you on starting a flock...I've wanted to do it for years and years!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a wonderful day, Doreen
Soooo cute! I've been "hearing" the call to the feed store. I haven't decided if I will get a couple more chicks this year. but how can a person resist????
ReplyDeleteDebbie
You didnt.*
ReplyDeleteOh yes you did! -- AND PAULA... MUST SAY... I truly "understand." I would have too.
Just read the story of you n Cecil. What a wonderful memory and it explains EVERYTHING. The rest was history right?
Hope your peepers do really well. Where do you keep them? In the barn under their heatlamp or in the house?
Oh Paula!!! I remember the feel of a chick against my cheek...I MISS the old farm!!!!!
ReplyDeletehughugs
I love baby chicks......and I cannot wait for spring
ReplyDeletekris
Oh! I didn't realize it was that time of year again! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI swear, I'm all rational with my "You're getting too many eggs as it is" thoughts... then I see the babies and I just think I HAVE to have them!
Be very careful. We went to Blue Seal and came home with 3 baby goats. Now we have 7. See what I mean. I love baby anythings.
ReplyDeleteKelly
Oh Paula...those sleepy babies....I told my husband I would NOT get more geese...Wonder if I could sneak in a chick or two or 6???
ReplyDeleteLove, Debra
The chicks are so sweet....and they out live their egg laying by years! We have assisted living for the older chickens and glad we do!!
ReplyDeleteHow many eggs are you getting these days? Our weather has been so nice that we are getting more eggs than ever.
Hi Paula,
