Friday Farm Fotos: Plow, Plant, and Pray

Lily and Tiny share a moment at the fence.

I found a quote on the internet not too long ago in which the beautiful Audrey Hepburn once said,
"To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow."
I love that.
I also know firsthand how frustrating it is to plant one day and then the weather make you lose all hope in your garden the very next day.
Ugh. Thanks a lot, Mother Nature.

(Sorry, I'm a child of the 70's. :)

Hubby plowed our little garden spot in early March.
Here he is at work with the sheep cheering him on in the barn behind him.
Gotta have teamwork to make a garden.

The ground was so beautiful and dark.... thanks to some heavy doses of manure.

Hopes were high for our little garden this year!
We planted onions, broccoli, and cabbage near the end of March.

Then it snowed.

Aaaand we had a frost. A hard one.

And our poor broccoli... eh, it didn't look so good.

The blossoms on my apple and pear trees didn't fare so well, either.
No fruit from them this year. *pout*

Hubby left the broccoli alone, and it actually came back to life after a few days of warm sunshine.
Yay!
Here he is working the rows with "Cubby".

I think everything will be alright after all this cold weather. Time will tell.
We put corn in the ground this week~
I'll be anxious to see if it makes it "knee-high by the fourth of July."

My strawberry plants made it through the winter and cold snaps just fine and dandy.
This picture makes me smile like you would not believe.
In fact, I'm smiling as I type this. *giggle*

You know what else makes me smile?
Baby chicks!
*squeeeeeeeal*

But we'll talk about that next time.
*wink*
Happy Friday!!!

  1. Yes Mother Nature pulled a few tricks on us this year too! We got a very very late freeze. Our garden managed pretty well with over 200 seedlings in the ground! Thank heaven for hay and alllllll those old nusery pots! Yep I was out covering them all! We only lost about 5 plants! Our fruit trees on the other hand yes most in bloom :O(... didn't do so well...Your strawberries are so pretty! Yummy! I have a flat to get planted yet LOL... Give Lily a tummy rub for me. She is cute as ever :O)

  2. I always feel a twinge of envy when I see good, dark garden soil. We have so much clay in our soil that it gets hard on top after a hard rain. We only got good stands of everything planted on one end of the rows. :( I'm also feeling envy over those beautiful strawberries! Forgive me ??

  6. Those strawberries look amazing!! We finally got our garden out this year. (First time at our new house) It's surrounded by trees so we're not sure how well it will do but I'm hoping for at least onions & potatoes! :)

  7. Oh my - those strawberries look great. :-)
Things are very slow here in Wisconsin. The leaves are just starting to bud out....slowly!

  8. Lovely pictures.
Mother nature can do strange things sometimes, all work and you have to do it again.
The deer around here find my apple-tree to spice one. Wild-pork do the same thing that Hubby, but they don't do it so perfect in the ground.

    I like your strawberry :)

  10. Way to catch us up in this blog post!! I think we're through with all the various "winters" around here don't you? Maybe it's finally "growing time"! We only have a few peaches on our trees from the same frosts you mentioned. I think the farmers markets will be where I hang out this year.

  12. your garden looks lovely and sorry about the frost. we're still having frost as well but, then again, it's blackberry winter around here. not having a garden this year...makes me cry...but so much to be done and can't do a garden justice. perhaps a few tomato plants...

  13. Gorgeous strawberries! Wishing you well with your garden, and the sweet chickens! I didn't plant as much this spring as I had before....just had too many fails due to extreme heat. I didn't want to water, water, water if I wasn't going to get much yield. But I did pick my first tomato yesterday. Yay! :-)
