Some of you may remember the
Little Terrorist and how she held three eggs hostage back in the spring.... if you'll recall, one of the eggs was hers but the others were two very large green eggs she plopped her hiney on just to show off her brooding abilities. The egg that actually belonged to her turned out to be a tiny little rooster, and one of the green eggs never hatched- but the other hostage turned out to be a hen.
Fast forward six months.....
This is the hostage today, otherwise known as Liza Minelli. She has turned out to be a rather striking hen- she is part Araucana and part Silver Penciled Hamburg. (Yep,
Hamburger was the culprit.) Over the weekend, I kept noticing Liza wanting to go inside the Silkies' coop... I assumed she was hungry and wanting to eat some of the leftovers in their feed dish. But while the Silkies were outside and I had my back turned, Liza promptly ran inside the coop and into one of the nest boxes. I found Hubby and told him to come quick- Liza was about to lay her first egg. We waited anxiously and about 10 minutes later, we were rewarded with this-
Liza has inherited the green egg trait!
Now if you'll excuse me, I must indulge myself in some "
chickie love".....
Isn't Beau handsome? *sigh*
Gertie, Clementine and Sadie busily pecking. Have you ever seen anything so sweet...
Oh dear......
Please- not the fuzzy bottoms.....
I can't... help... myself......
Sounds like Hamburger has been making some late night visits!! Love your chickie pictures!!
ReplyDeleteToo cute ~ I love that they all have names! And yes, Liza IS quite the looker!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your blog post title, Paula! LOL! I was just wondering how the silkies were doing! Thanks for the photos of their cute little fluffy hind ends, LOL! Love the green egg, too! Wow, that is cool! You have a very cool life. :)
ReplyDeleteHooray for fuzzy bottoms!! I'm glad I'm not the only one! So great to see your silkies - what a lovely sight. Mine are all snow covered now. Congrats to Liza on her first egg, and what a beauty it was!
ReplyDeleteI love to see pictures of your chickens, Paula. They are all so pretty!
ReplyDeleteBTW, all of our girls are green egg layers, too!
Hey Paula, Liza is beautiful! I can't wait for spring to get here because we have decided to get a few chicks. I had picked out what I wanted but after seeing Liza I might be changing my mind once again. It didn't take much to talk hubby into getting chicks but I've been asking for atleast 4 years for a couple goats and keep getting a NO. I only want two of them :( Take Care :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post Paula! Love the fuzzy bottoms and congratulations to Liza!!
ReplyDeleteHi Paula, your chickens are so darn cute! That little bottom is just to adorable and a green egg, how sweet is that? I just love to read your chicken posts! I want chickens so bad, I still have not talked hubby into thinking I should too....sigh...Until then, I will get my enjoyments from your posts....
ReplyDeleteLove, Ann
Oh, Paula, Liza is beautiful and looks much like her namesake. Did she sing when she laid that egg? Is it going to be eaten or saved for posterity's sake?
ReplyDeleteSeriously, I love the girls. They are such gorgeous chickens.
Hope you are keeping warm in this awful weather. How do you keep the ladies warm?
Oh, the fuzzy butt's get me every time. And the Ameriburger is adorable! Makes me want a Hamburger Roo..
ReplyDelete*squeal!* I LOVE it when you post fuzzy butt pictures!! And a green egger, even more exciting! We currently have three that are laying green/blue and hopefully a couple more will give us some goodies this coming spring (that is if they make it through the frozen EVERYTHING right now!)
ReplyDeleteOh, dont'cha just love those chickens. A Hamburg and an Americauna, that is a combo I haven't seen until now and Miss Liza IS striking. Can she belt out a tune to match her name ? But then, Liza Minelli is known for being rather showy and flashy and your Liza lays flashy eggs!
ReplyDeleteYeah for the green egg! All of mine so far have turned out to be brown egg chickens but I have one more that isn't laying yet so I am still hoping for green.
ReplyDeleteSo glad for the update on how those chicks turned out --Liza M appears to be an eager egg layer and quite the beauty. DH is still set against having chickens (bad childhood memories) so I have to enjoy chickie thoughts through bloggers.
ReplyDeleteAwww! I am soooo happy for you! We are anxiously awaiting our first eggs from our buff's!! They are old enough to start laying and we look every day for our gifts from them!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome...I love green eggs!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet Paula :0) Hmm Green eggs? not sure I've seen one of them except of course green eggs and ham...LOL I love your chicks and all the posts about them...thanks for sharing those feathery bottoms :0)
ReplyDeleteNo doubt about it... there's just something about pictures of chickens that melt away at a country heart! Your chickens are just beautiful. Blessings, Kathleen
ReplyDeleteYou had me with this sweet story! It's quite an accomplishment for any female species to have a baby...even if it is an egg! Did you get to feel the egg while it was still soft and warm? Your chickens live quite well.
ReplyDeleteI love this . It is too cute.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Liza...what a beautiful egg.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Pam
What incredibly beautiful photos.
ReplyDeleteso delighted to hear some silkie news...I just love those little ones..they are so cute...and you are right, the hostage, Lisa is very pretty...
ReplyDeleteohhhhhhhhhh Paula, I am in love with your chickens too...I miss my chickens sooooo bad..Hopefully we will soon find some land instead of being in town..
ReplyDelete~C~
LOL awww, I just LOVE your farm can I come live there?? I would surely be in Heaven :) Blessings to you and yours, Diana
ReplyDeleteLiza is gorgeous! I was just wondering if my araucana mated with a roo of a different breed if the offspring would lay blue eggs. I'm glad it's possible. I love to show off my favorite rooster too!
ReplyDeleteI come here with my chin resting on my palm and think... I WANT CHICKENS, I WANT A FARM! I have farm envy. Oh well, I'll have to live my farm life through your blog. Your animals have such great personalities.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of your chooks! That is one funky comb!
ReplyDeleteI have a cochin who seems to be going broody. She is always on the favorite nest and is quite the crabby girl when I pick her up and move her over by the food. I don't want any January chicks running around!?
Miss Paula....they are beautiful.....do chickies let you smooch their little beaks? I am thinking that may be dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing about your animals and the pictures are great.
Way to go Liza!!!
You have a wonderful home--I love to visit and read all about your adventures.
ReplyDeleteThere is a little something for you at my blog.
Blessings,
Pam
Pretty egg-pretty Chickens-you should be proud of them!
ReplyDeleteHey Paula,
ReplyDeleteChicken are wonderful, never a dull moment, is there? I have green egg layers also and hubby will not eat them, says, they look odd. I assured him they are the same inside just a different color shell.
Oh, look, at the babies, one of each, isn't that every mothers dream. LOL
I can hardly wait to have our hens hatch out some of our own stock. How do you keep track of who lays what, with 26 hens it is nearly impossible (we average 12 eggs a day) to figure out who's laying what. Each morning when I go out to feed and water them all the eggs are in one box just waiting to be picked up (that's if there's not a hen laying on them) I don't like to disturb a layer...
As always, I have enjoyed my visit to your blog today. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Paula,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your thoughts and prayers! I appreciate it more than you know!
Your chickens are real cuties...thought I never brag on a chicken! The chicks are adorable!
Hope your day's a good one, my friend!
Liza Minelli is a pretty chicken. I love green and blue eggs! Congrats on your new egg!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful egg!!! I love the pictures and I just love how much you enjoy your beautiful chicks!!!
ReplyDeleteJuri
Just dropped back by to wish you a merry Christmas and many blessings for the new year! blessings, Kathleen
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute post!!! I love your chickens.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
Ginger
Congratulations on getting a green egg layer from such an interesting cross! You must be thrilled. I see Liza has white ear lobes and a speckled breast from her daddy. She's a pretty chook for sure!
ReplyDeleteI love reading chicken stories almost as much as my having my own chicken stories. I have been waiting all summer for one of my Americana/Barred Rock pullets to start laying. She is gorgeous. Typical barred rock color but she has tufts by her ears. Very cool looking.
ReplyDeleteThenks for the comment on my blog about the deer sausage. If you could I would love to have his sausage recipe. We tried a couple recipes but I would love to have a tried and true one.
Thanks so much for the chicken story, I was so excited to see the before shot of the chicks and the after shot of her in the nesting box. Loved it.
Beth
Paula,
ReplyDeleteI know exactly how you feel...even though I pet goose bottoms, I did feel a strong urge to pet a chicken bottom looking at your luscious chickens!!
That egg is a work of art...
Love, Debra
PS I have to go out RIGHT NOW to pet my geese.
They are all just absolutely the CUTEST!! Those fuzzy butts are too funny! Green eggs are just too cool! I always enjoy seeing your beautiful chickens!
ReplyDeleteUntil I met you, I had never given chickens a second thought. Now, I can't wait to see what you have posted about them! Such cute fluffy bottoms!
ReplyDeleteEvery last one of them are adorable! They look much more civilized then the meanie's that used to terrorize me when I was a little girl. (OK, maybe I wasn't that little, but chickens can be scary things ~ LOL!) I always loved the green eggs. Don't even need to dye them for Easter!
ReplyDeleteWhen she has her chickens in spring you will have to call one of them Judy Garland, for sure!
ReplyDeletePaula
You have a wonderful christmas and new year, stay safe and count your blessings.
Cya in the new year.
Rose
HOw fun, I have a little flock of 12 hens (I live in the burbs, no roosters for me) and I love then! I have one hen that lays green eggs and they are my favorite. Someday I will live on a farm and I am going to have dozens and dozens (ok exagerating a bit) of chicken and roosters, and I am going to let them hatch there own eggs too.
ReplyDeleteKeep posting those pictures, I love to look at them. The puffy ones are so cute.
Hey CHICKlet,
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited that Liza is laying green. Now you can have GREEN EGGS AND HAM ... SAM SAM I AM! LOL
I LOVE auracaunas! They have always been my favorites. Mostly the ones I have are mixed now. Last year, I bought baby pullets at Atwoods. But guess what? THEY ARE ALL ROOSTERS! uhuh. I am hoping this spring when they sell again, they can give me a few new chicks that really are girls! egads. I have a rooster ranch.*
Love your chickadees,
Dontchya just LOVE living on a farm?
Later gater,
SEND MY LOVE TO THE BROOD
Lea
Oh that sly Hamburger! LOL Liza is a beauty and what an egg for a first! Wow! What a girl!
ReplyDeleteSmiles,
Lea
Oh, Miss Paula!
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny and making me want my hens right now! Only thing is, I don't know what I'm gonna do with 'em. Doesn't make me stop wanting, though...
You really need to get in touch with a book editor! Especially a children's book editor, because I can already imagine reading such a book to my future grandbabies...
Oooh! I'm just so excited! You really MUST write a series of books about your farm adventures for my grandbabies! C'mon .... pleeeeeeeease?!?!?
I'm shutting up, now, but I'm still thinking about it.
Merry Christmas,
Julie
I just have to get some Araucana's now!
ReplyDeleteTalking about mixed up chicks. I have a banty mixed with a Golden Polish. That little biddie has about 3 feathers on top of his(I think it is going to be a him) head.
Congrats. to Liza.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Pam
Yay for Liza! She is such a cutie! Her eggs are SO blue!! Mine look more gray than blue- very pretty :)
ReplyDeleteLove love love those silkies! I have them all picked out! Just waiting for the snow to melt now ;)
Happy Holidays!
Yay for another green egg layer! I think it's neat how they're all a different shade of green and/or blue!
